Episode 090: The Great Dust-up of 1947

Episode 090: The Great Dust-up of 1947

July 28, 2019

There's not much in the way of rough hockey these days. Lucky for us we have a time machine. This week we travel back in time to 1947 to New York City.  We munch on some pop corn, and watch the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers beat the ever-loving crap out of each other.  The rumble is one of the greatest fights in hockey history, and by the time it's over, the two teams could have played an extra period of hockey.

Episode 089: The Doraty Game

Episode 089: The Doraty Game

July 14, 2019

A game begins on Monday, April 3, 1933.  A game ends on Tuesday, April 4, 1933. Would you believe me if I told you those two dates actually represent the same game? It's true. The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins were locked in a 2-2 series tie in a best-of-five games series to decide which team would advance to the Stanley Cup Final. They both easily anticipated an incredibly climactic game, but what they most certainly didn't anticipate was how long it would take to end. Join me in reliving the story of the second-longest game in NHL playoff history.

The Sons of Slaves (Part III) as read by Saucy Rockets

The Sons of Slaves (Part III) as read by Saucy Rockets

June 30, 2019

Due to my illness during this series, Mary and Leah of "Saucy Rockets: A Hockey Podcast" stepped up, and lent me their voices for this episode. Episode 086 in this series is still read by me (once I recovered) but I left this version in tact as a thank you to these two fine ladies for helping me out.

Episode 088: The Sons of Slaves Supplemental

June 29, 2019

A reading of the appendix of the book "Black Ice" by George and Daril Fosty. The reading covers birthdays of notable players (and the teams they played for), a list of Colored Hockey League champions, and the "Code" of the league. See you all next week when I return from vacation.

Episode 087: The Sons of Slaves (Part IV)

June 23, 2019

The finale of the Colored Hockey League's story has arrived. In this episode we see the league sputter, and fall. We see black heroes save their community in legal battles against the city of Halifax only to have those they'd saved turn against them. We see the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes die.

Episode 086: The Sons of Slaves (Part III)

June 15, 2019

I'm back! "Patient Zero" has returned from illness.  This episode is my reading of Part III (the same episode read by Saucy Rockets while I was sick).

In this episode we cover the expansion of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, the first interracial game of hockey, the invention of the slap-shot, and even the first night game.

Episode 085: The Sons of Slaves (Part II)

May 27, 2019

The Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes is back for part two. We talk about the leaders of the league (the league front office, so to speak), the first puck drop, the freezing-out of the league by the white community, and a whole lot more.

Episode 084: The Sons of Slaves (Part I)

Episode 084: The Sons of Slaves (Part I)

May 10, 2019

My sincerest apologies for this episode being so late. Last weekend was crazy, and I hope to never have one like it again.  That said, let's talk about the episode.

In part one of this new series, we mainly set the stage for the how the black population came to be in Canada.  We will learn about "resettled" free blacks who established colonies; runaway American slaves seeking safety in the North via the Underground Railroad, and Canadian slaves who get their freedom when slavery is outlawed in the British Empire in 1833.

After we establish where everyone came from, we begin to scratch the surface of the greatest hockey league to ever be (almost) completely forgotten: the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes.  Beginning in 1895, the Colored Hockey League sprouted up as the brain child of Henry Sylvester Williams.  He helped kick start the league's original two teams: the Halifax Eurekas, and the Halifax Stanley.  However, his genius that manifested as the Colored Hockey League may never have been were it not for the help of a wildly established organization that sought to gain equality for the Black People, the Baptist Church.

Episode 083: A Heart Made for War (Part III)

Episode 083: A Heart Made for War (Part III)

April 21, 2019

Doug Smith has just been released from a potential spot with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.  He returns home to Boston with the ever-present question, "What now?" on his mind.  Well, much like a cat with nine lives, Doug's hockey dream just can't be laid to rest.

Doug's old friend, Commander, comes calling once again with an offer to join a team in need of a tough guy.  Without a moment's hesitation, Doug agrees, and he's off to Canada to play for the Miramichi Packers.

After his season with the Packers, Doug bounces around, landing where ever someone needs to have a set a knuckles.  All things, good and bad, must come to an end; and so, too, must Doug's hockey career.  However, just because one thing ends, doesn't mean something even better isn't right around the corner.

Follow along as we close out our story on Doug "The Thug" Smith.  We cover his final playing days, his memoir, and even a couple of Hollywood movies you may have heard of...
